Lupines are a great way to add intense color and height to a landscape, and the WESTCOUNTRY™ Tequila Flame Lupine will not disappoint. The showy flower spikes are covered in evenly spaced blooms in shades of red and yellow. The tall flower spires are complemented by glossy green foliage made up of several leaflets. This fast-growing plant blooms from spring until early summer.

Lupines make striking mass plantings or borders, use them in landscapes, and they’re a natural focal point or specimen planting. The flower spikes can be trimmed and used as cut flowers so you can enjoy the blooms inside of your home. Pollinators like bees and butterflies are naturally drawn to the blooms, but this plant is deer-resistant. Grow the WESTCOUNTRY™ Tequila Flame Lupine in USDA zones 5 through 8.

WESTCOUNTRY™ Tequila Flame Lupine Care

Lupines need full sun, which means at least 6 hours of sunlight. This plant can handle partial sunlight, but it may not produce as many flowers in lower light. Water weekly and be prepared to step up the watering routine during a dry spell. This plant likes consistently damp soil, but it does not like to be soggy, so use well-draining soil. The soil should also be rich and have a neutral to slightly acidic pH.

Remove spent flowers to clean up the look, promote more flower production, and extend the blooming period. Feeding is not necessary if grown in rich soil. You can top dress the soil with organic compost or give the plant a boost by using balanced, water-soluble plant food.

WESTCOUNTRY™ Tequila Flame Lupine Spacing

The flowers of the WESTCOUNTRY™ Tequila Flame Lupine will reach 24 to 36 inches tall, while the plant typically spreads out 18 to 24 inches. When creating a mass planting or a consistent border, space plants 18 to 24 inches center to center.
