Japanese Anemone is the flower to bridge the summer to fall gap. The sturdy foliage makes a great backdrop to other summer blooming perennials. When those hot colored summer bloomers are done, the cool and serene shades of Windflower appear to signal the change of season. Whirlwind Windflower is a delicate but tough plant that works well with other plants in either a formal garden or relaxed Cottage Garden setting. The pure white, semi double blooms are held high above the foliage on graceful, but sturdy stems. A good cut flower that is long lasting in the vase.
Whirlwind Windflower is a great late season source of food for beneficial pollinators. This herbaceous perennial is also deer, rabbit and disease resistant. Hummingbirds love this plant.
Whirlwind Japanese Anemone Care
Windflowers tolerate a wide range of light conditions. It will bloom equally well in the part shade of a woodland garden or full sun of a cottage garden. This plant is not fussy about soil pH and settles well into any well drained, moist soil. In fact, this perennial is probably both the most elegant and tough plant you could grow. Dividing every 2-3 years will help Windflowers to remain vigorous growers and bloomers.
Fertilizing should be done early in the summer when the foliage begins to emerge. A well balanced, slow release feed is recommended. Windflowers can handle short periods of drought after they are mature and established. The only annual maintenance required is to clean up the old growth early in the spring. Allowing the top of the plant to die down naturally in the fall will provide the crown protection from cold, harsh winter.
Whirlwind Japanese Anemone Spacing
Windflowers look best when they are planted in large groups. They can also be effective in late summer and fall container plantings as a filler. Space these plants 28 - 32 inches on center to give a ice full look from the first season.
