Robust minty-scented foliage along sturdy stems offset an explosion of lavender-purple plumes that appear in late April. Whispurr™ Blue Catmint, Nepeta x faassenii Whispurr™️, is a vigorous long-season bloomer, putting on a colorful show from late spring through early September.
Whispurr™ Blue Catmint is quite frost tolerant and hardy in Zones 4-9. It maintains a compact form and grows up to 28 inches tall with a spread of 22 inches. The densely packed foliage has a lovely mint fragrance. This is a much-loved magnet for butterflies and other pollinating insects. Its mounding habit and long blooming season make a vibrant colorful impression when planted en masse along paths and walkways.
Whispurr™ Blue Catmint Care
Find an area in your garden where Whispurr™ Blue Catmint will receive full to partial sun, at least 5-8 hours per day. Whispurr™ Blue Catmint will benefit from being planted in a location that has afternoon shade in very hot regions. It thrives in average, well-drained soils. Water regularly and deeply during the first growing season to get the plant off to a great start. Once Whispurr™ Blue Catmint is mature, reduce watering frequency, and allow the soil to dry slightly before watering again.
Whispurr™ Blue can easily be grown in containers; be sure the container has ample drainage holes and well-draining potting soil. Whispurr™ Blue Catmint needs little care other than removing spent flowers to promote extended blooming throughout the season. Propagation can be done by division every few years or spreading the dried seeds around the base of your plant to encourage wider spread in the following years. Whispurr™ Blue Catmint is cold hardy down to Zone 4; in colder regions apply a few inches of natural mulch around the root area for added protection.
Whispurr™ Blue Catmint Spacing
Whispurr™ Blue Catmint is a wonderful addition to pollinator gardens and perennial beds, works very well as an edging along walkways, and can easily be grown in containers. To avoid crowding, space Whispurr™ Blue Catmint 22-24 inches apart on center from other plants to account for its mature spread.
