White Album® Wintercreeper brightens the landscape with crisp green leaves edged in creamy white. Euonymus fortunei 'Alban' forms a low evergreen mound about 18 to 24 inches tall and wide, giving small borders and foundation fronts year-round foliage color. Its larger leaves and stable variegation give it a cleaner look than older green-and-white wintercreeper selections. We use it in part-sun beds where dark mulch, brick, or shaded walkways need a lighter evergreen edge.
This Proven Winners® ColorChoice® selection was developed as an improved form of the popular green-and-white wintercreeper type, with better leaf spot resistance and more consistent growth. Small greenish flowers are not showy, so the plant is grown for foliage rather than bloom. White Album® Wintercreeper tolerates urban conditions, pruning, dry periods once established, and a range of soil pH levels. Plant it in maintained borders, edging, containers, foundation plantings, mass plantings, and small-space groundcover areas where spread can be managed.
White Album® Wintercreeper Care
Plant White Album® Wintercreeper in part sun to full sun, with part sun often best in hot summer climates. It grows in most average, well-drained soils and adapts to acidic, neutral, or alkaline conditions. Avoid extremely wet sites, since constant moisture around the roots can lead to decline.
Water thoroughly after planting to fully hydrate the root ball. Continue to provide steady moisture while roots move into the surrounding soil. Once established, this shrub tolerates some drought and dry shade, though foliage stays fuller with occasional irrigation during heat. Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release tree and shrub fertilizer when faster growth or stronger fill is desired. Remove any solid green shoots as soon as they appear so the variegated foliage remains dominant.
Prune White Album® Wintercreeper in early spring to shape the mound and control width. It tolerates heavier trimming, but light, regular cuts are usually enough for edging and containers. Keep this plant away from trees, fences, and natural areas in regions where wintercreeper is restricted or has shown invasive behavior.
White Album® Wintercreeper Spacing
Space White Album® Wintercreeper 18 to 36 inches apart for edging, groundcover-style plantings, or low foundation groups. Use closer spacing when a faster connected border is desired and wider spacing when each mound should remain distinct. For containers, choose a pot at least 12 to 14 inches wide with drainage holes, and trim runners before they reach nearby beds.
In part-shade borders, combine White Album® Wintercreeper with coral bells and sedge, which keep the planting low while adding contrasting leaf shape and color. Place hydrangeas behind it so the variegated evergreen foliage covers the front edge after summer hydrangea flowers fade. In containers, use begonias or wishbone flowers with White Album® Wintercreeper for seasonal bloom in bright shade.
