Growing Zones
Darling white flowers bloom over a layer of silvery-green variegated foliage, giving the White Nancy Dead Nettle a striking appearance. This plant, also known as Lamium maculatum, is an aggressive grower that is non-invasive. Delicate pure white flowers grow in clusters and bloom from late May through early June. The heart-shaped leaves have silvery-white centers and green margins with scalloped edges.
Use this lovely plant as a groundcover or a mass planting in a shady corner of a landscape. White Nancy Dead Nettle sends out stolons, or runners, and will quickly spread out, creating a mat-like cover. Include in a container so the spreading foliage can cascade over the side. This plant responds well to pruning, so cut it back if it oversteps its bounds or let it do its thing and fill in an area. Dead nettle is deer- and rabbit-resistant, making it a wonderful source of greenery even in areas with many foraging animals. Grow this plant as a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 8.
White Nancy Dead Nettle Care
Plant in full shade for best results. This plant will require consistent water, especially for the first growing season, but let the soil mostly dry out before watering. Soil should be rich, moist, and well-draining.
Pruning is not generally necessary, but you can cut the plant back to keep it contained in a specific area. Deadhead the spent blooms to encourage more flowers. Fertilize in the fall to support continued growth in the spring.
White Nancy Dead Nettle Spacing
White Nancy Dead Nettle has a spreading tendency and will grow 6 to 8 inches tall and spread 12 to 24 inches. Space plants 12 to 24 inches apart to create a full mat of greenery.
