As a compact perennial, Lupinus ‘White Shades’ can be used for a variety of uses. Growing to a mere 8 to 12 inches high, White Shades Lupine produces elegant white flower spikes on top of its bright green foliage. With its blooms that develop in May to June, this lupine is perfect for adding some early summer interest.
Being perennial, this plant will die back in the winter but comes back year after year and can even self-seed if given the chance. Often ignored by Bambi and Thumper, White Shades Lupine is a great choice for both rural and urban gardens. Due to its compact form, the White Shades Lupine is ideal for growing at the front of a border or for adding to an herbaceous bed or planter.
White Shades Lupine Care
Although its ideal location is in full sun, this lupine will also tolerate some light shade. Well-drained soil is necessary for White Shades Lupine to thrive, along with a neutral to acidic pH. To help prevent fungal disease, water this plant at the base, keeping the soil moist until a good root system is formed. Fertilizing lupines is generally not required. However, to promote flowering, you can add a weak solution of a phosphorus-based feed as the buds appear.
As the flowers fade, deadheading will encourage new blooms. When the foliage yellows and dies back in the fall, you can cut the stems back to soil level. When grown in a container, more frequent irrigation will be necessary to prevent the soil from completely drying out.
White Shades Lupine Spacing
When fully grown, the White Shades Lupine can grow to 12 inches high and 14 inches wide. A plant spacing of 12 to 15 inches is advisable to encourage good ventilation around the plants.
