White Spruce is a tall evergreen conifer that grows well in damp soil. Also known as Picea glauca, this tree is native to the northern reaches of North America. The half-inch-long needles have a bluish-green hue and a lovely pine scent when crushed. The flaky bark and brown cones with thin scales add to the visual appeal of this tree.

This tree has an upright growth habit and can reach up to 60 feet tall. White spruce does best in moist soil, making this tree a good choice along a pond, lake, or anywhere with damp conditions. These trees are deer resistant and suitable for rural locations. Grow Picea glauca in zones 2 through 6.

White Spruce Care

White spruce thrives in damp soil, but the soil must have drainage because soggy conditions are damaging. This cultivar is not picky about soil pH. While this tree can handle partial sun, plant it in full sun for the best results. Water this tree regularly until established, and thereafter during hot weather or a dry spell. Be aware of other trees, buildings, and power lines when selecting a planting site because white spruce can grow rather tall.

Pruning is not often necessary for white spruce. Remove dead or damaged branches, but this tree has a pleasing natural form and does not need to be shaped.

Apply a layer of mulch around the base of young trees to help them through the first few winters. Mature trees do not need winter care and can easily handle cold weather.

White Spruce Spacing

Mature white spruce trees stand 40 to 60 feet tall and span 10 to 20 feet wide. Anticipate the mature size when planting white spruce and leave 10 feet between trees so air can flow around the branches and the canopy can spread to its mature side.
