The daisy-like blooms of the White Woodland Aster provide a bright pop in a garden or landscape space late into the season. Aster divaricatus blooms during the late summer, and the blooms will hang around through the fall. Thin, white petals fold back to reveal the yellow center of the flowers. The blooms grow on branched stems in a dark mahogany hue. The stems also feature deep green, oval-shaped leaves with toothed edges. This plant almost looks like a cloud from a distance when the abundant white flowers are blooming.
White Woodland Aster has an upright, mounded growth habit and is a great perennial to feature in a bed, border, or mass planting. Use this plant as a groundcover or feature it along with perennials that bloom during the spring and early summer so this Aster can pick up where the others leave off. This is a native plant, so once it is acclimated, it will require very little care, and it is favored by pollinators and birds that will eat the seeds once the flowers fade. This beauty grows as a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 8.
White Woodland Aster Care
This plant prefers rich soil that is dry and well-drained. Plant Aster in full sun to partial shade. With average water needs, White Woodland Aster will need water weekly or when the top several inches of soil dry out.
Since it is native to North America, Aster grows very well without fertilizer. You can give the plant a boost by applying organic mulch around the base of this perennial in the spring, but it is not necessary. Wait until the flowers die back before trimming this plant. All of the greenery can be cut back in the fall.
White Woodland Aster Spacing
Mature plants will grow 18 to 24 inches tall. This perennial will reach 24 to 36 inches wide. Plants can be spaced 20 to 22 inches apart to create a full, meadow-like look.
