Winecraft Black Smokebush (Cotinus coggygria) is a dwarf smokebush that provides nearly year-round color in your yard. The bush grows up to 6 feet high and wide. Its rich wine-colored leaves appear in spring and darken before turning orange-red in fall and hanging on until frost. In summer, large, wispy blooms of seeds appear, representing the "smoke" in the shrub's name. The Winecraft variety grows in a rounded, short shape so it is a versatile shrub to place in your landscape.
Winecraft Black Smokebush is easy to care for and hardy to the cold or heat of zones 4 through 8. Just plant it in full sun for the best health and bloom. Place a Winecraft in the center of a garden bed to serve as the centerpiece or make a colorful red hedge by planting a row of smoke bushes. In a container, place your smokebush toward the back to serve as a deep purplish-red backdrop for other plants.
Winecraft Black Smokebush Care
There is no need to prune your Winecraft Black Smokebush except for light shaping or maintain an even hedge. Prune in early spring. Place your shrub in average to alkaline soil that drains well. The shrub is deer and rabbit resistant. Just give it deep, average water, especially in its first season or two.
Winecraft Black Smokebush Spacing
For a hedge effect, plant several Winecraft Black Smokebush plants about 5 feet apart. Give it 7 feet spacing between other plants or structures.
