Columbine is an early bloomer that welcomes in spring with vibrant blooms. The Winky Blue and White Columbine, or Aquilegia is an upright perennial that features long-spurred upright-facing blooms with full blue outer petals and white inner petals with blue accents. This beauty blooms during the spring and summer. Branched stems also support delicate green foliage.
This plant has a compact, upright growth habit. The Winky Blue and White Columbine can be featured in beds, borders, or mass plantings. Cut the blooms to use in arrangements. The showy flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds, but the foliage is deer-resistant. This plant grows as a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 8.
Winky Blue and White Columbine Care
Plant the Winky Blue and White Columbine in full to partial sun. Increased light in the spring will support rapid growth and blooms, but this beauty will appreciate shade later in the growing season. Columbine needs water when the top couple inches of soil dry out. Plant in moist but well-drained soil. Apply a balanced fertilizer monthly starting in the spring.
Deadhead the plant to keep it looking neat and prevent self-seeding. Prune the growth back to the basal leaves in the autumn.
Winky Blue and White Columbine Spacing
Winky Blue and White Columbine is an upright growing plant that will reach 18 to 20 inches tall and 12 to 15 inches wide. Space plants 8 to 10 inches apart to create a lush, continuous planting.
