Winky Red & White Columbine is a heavy bloomer that boasts some of the showiest and most beautiful flowers. The upright-facing flowers have long reddish-purple spurs surrounding white-tipped corollas or inner petals. Aquilegia is a prolific bloomer that puts on a show from spring until early summer. The flowers are contrasted by dark green, deeply lobed foliage.
Columbine has an upright growth habit and maintains a relatively compact footprint. Feature this beauty is border, beds, or mass plantings. Its easy-care nature makes the Winky Red & White Columbine a good choice for a container, and it will add vibrant color early in the season to a porch or outdoor area. While the flowers are lovely to admire, they are also favored by pollinators like butterflies and hummingbirds. This plant grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8.
Winky Red & White Columbine Care
Select a spot with full to partial sun for this stunner. Full sun during the spring will encourage this fast-grower to get to work and push out beautiful flowers. This plant will be completely content with partial sun later in the growing season. Soil should be moist but still allow for drainage. Columbine plants need water when the top layer of the soil starts to dry out. Support healthy growing and an abundant bloom cycle by feeding the plant a balanced fertilizer every 3 to 4 weeks, beginning in the spring.
Remove spent flowers to prevent the Winky Red & White Columbine from self-seeding. Deadheading the plant will also keep it looking tidy. Leave the greenery in place even after the flowers fade so the plant can prepare for the next growing season. Trim back all of the growth to the basal leaves in the fall.
Winky Red & White Columbine Spacing
This Columbine will reach 12 to 14 inches tall and wide. The Winky cultivar is mildew tolerant, but space plants 14 inches apart so air can circulate around the foliage.
