Buddleia’s common name is Butterfly Bush and for the very obvious reason that it will attract any and all butterflies in your neighborhood. Wisteria Lane Weeping BUtterfly Bush has a gorgeous open weeping shape that would be a dramatic focal point in a Cottage Garden or part of an informal hedge along a fence or property line. The grape purple flower sprays are very fragrant and bloom non-stop all summer long.
Wisteria Lane Weeping Butterfly Bush which is well behaved and keeps to a manageable size unlike other varieties of Buddleia. Butterflies like the nectar or the flowers, but do not lay their eggs on the foliage like they do with other supporting plants. The best way to keep Wisteria Lane from self seeding and becoming a pest is to deadhead the flowers before they can form seed. The flowers also are long lasting as bouquets when cut while still 50 percent in bud.
Wisteria Lane Weeping Butterfly Bush Care
Butterfly Bush will bloom the best in full sun, but will tolerate shade early in the day or late in the afternoon. Wisteria Lane does not have a preference for heavy or light soil or acid or alkaline soil. Basically this shrub will grow anywhere there is enough light and water. Supplemental watering will be needed for the first 2-3 years. After that Butterfly Bush is very drought tolerant.
Pruning in the early spring will help to clean up any winter damage. Cut out diseased, dying, dead or diagonal branches. There is no danger of losing blossoms when pruned early. Butterfly bush blooms on current season growth. In the lower hardiness zones, winter damage can be heavy and a hard cutback to 6-8 inches above ground will rejuvenate and recover the lovely weeping shape.
Wisteria Lane Weeping Butterfly Bush Spacing
Wisteria Lane is not an overly tall shrub, but it can be very wide at maturity. A height of 24 inches and an overall width of 3-4 feet makes this a shrub that works better as a specimen planting. A spacing of 4 feet on center from other plants is recommended.
