The highly fragranced Wooly Thyme plant (Thymus pseudolanuginosus) is an edible herb with attractive foliage. It has silver, velvety leaves and light purple blooms. Wooly Thyme’s blooms appear during late spring and can last until mid-summer. This plant is an easy grower and makes an excellent groundcover or container plant for soft texture and color. Also referred to as Wooly Creeping Thyme, it only grows to a height of 1-3 inches and its spread is 18-20 inches.
Wooly Thyme Plant Care
Plant Wooly Thyme in a location that gets full sun, with 6 hours of bright light a day. In hot climates, plant this groundcover in partial sun with protection from the afternoon sun. Wooly Thyme needs well-draining soil and adapts well to rocky and sandy soils. Water Wooly Thyme consistently to get it established, especially if planting it in the spring. Once established, water when the top few inches of surrounding soil become dry. This plant doesn’t like to be overly watered, so err on the dry side.
Growing Wooly Thyme Plant
You can start Wooly Thyme indoors in early spring, later transplanting it outside. Or plant seeds or plugs directly in-ground after the threat of frost is gone. Regular trimming or mowing is recommended to encourage lush growth.
Watering Wooly Thyme Plant
Water Wooly Thyme only when the top 3-4 inches of soil are dry. This plant has shallow roots that can be damaged by too much water.
Feeding Wooly Thyme Plant
Fertilize Wooly Thyme once each spring. Apply a light layer of compost or a liquid fertilizer at half the recommended strength.
