Yellow Diamonds Sedum not only has attractive long-lasting blooms but looks great year-round with green foliage that turns shades of red when cold weather arrives. The juicy foliage is ground-hugging and great for smothering annual weeds in open garden beds. The yellow bunches of starlike flowers appear in late spring and last for weeks even in locations with poor soil or heavy clay.
Sedum middendorfianum, commonly known as Chinese Mountain Stonecrop, grows naturally in Asia and Europe at higher elevations. This winter hardy groundcover is invaluable for gardeners in cooler gardening zones. It is drought tolerant but also thrives in moist soils at the edge of a woodland. Sedum is a good choice to use as a ground cover in large areas of the garden. Tuck it into nooks and crannies of a dry stone wall, or use it as a filler plant in mixed seasonal containers. An easy-to-control spreading habit ensures this plant can be left on its own after planting.
Yellow Diamonds Sedum Care
Sedum is the ultimate plant-it-and-forget-it perennial. As long as the location has well-draining soil and full sun, this plant should thrive. Consistent watering is needed until the plant is established and actively putting on vigorous growth. Supplemental fertilizing is rarely needed even in poor soils. Sedum can tolerate partial shade as long as there is a period of direct sun exposure during the day.
Sedums growing in zones 6-7 may go completely dormant during the winter, losing all of their top growth. Any dead plant material should be removed in early spring as new growth begins to emerge, being careful to not disturb the delicate crown. Mulching with crushed oyster shells, fine pea gravel, or gritty sand improves plant appearance and prevents rot, even in containers. Removing the spent flower stems in summer is not necessary for good plant growth but will clean up the appearance and is easy to do without pruners or clippers.
Yellow Diamonds Sedum Spacing
Yellow Diamonds Sedum spreads quickly to 16-18 inches while remaining low to the ground at 8-10 inches tall. Space multiple plants 16 inches apart in a garden bed. Sedums in containers can be grown much closer together as they have very shallow roots that tolerate crowding among other annuals and perennials.
