Growing Zones
Haskaps produce juicy berries and Yezberry Sugar Pie Haskap grows them on a small shrub that reaches less than 4 feet high. The Haskap (Lonicera caerulea) grows new soft green leaves every spring that are followed by yellow tubular flowers. By early summer, pretty berries replace the flowers. They taste like a cross between a raspberry and blueberry and are good for cooking or eating right off the shrub.
The easy-care Yezberry Sugar Pie Haskap can attract bees to your garden, provide fruit for birds or your family and add pretty and productive height to a garden container. For best results, plant several together to add color, pollinators and plenty of delicious fruit to your garden. Deer tend to ignore haskaps, but the native shrubs adapt well to growing conditions in zones 3 through 7. Use this shrub for nearly any landscape feature, from a border of a garden bed to a mass grouping.
Yezberry Sugar Pie Haskap Care
Your Yezberry Sugar Pie Haskap will perform best if planted in full or part sun. Afternoon shade helps keep the plant healthy in areas with hot summers. To have fruit, plant another haskap variety nearby; both plants should bear fruit. The flowers and berries appear on wood from the previous year, so only prune your haskap soon after harvesting the fruit. If fruit is not sweet when tasted, wait a few days before harvesting.
Note: This plant will require another Yezberry® variety to be planted within 60 feet of this in order cross-pollinate each plant and to produce fruit.
Yezberry Sugar Pie Haskap Spacing
Yezberry Sugar Pie Haskap is a pretty plant with tasty berries. Plant several to create an attractive and edible hedge, spacing the shrubs about 3 to 4 feet from one center to another.
Interesting Facts - Yezberry Japanese haskaps are closely related to best-selling Sugar Mountain Sweetberry Honeysuckle. However, the Yezberry series was developed from purely Japanese strains of haskap, while the Sugar Mountain series is of Russian heritage.
Other differences: Yezberry haskaps bloom a bit later, so they're a good choice for areas that get frequent spring frosts. Yezberry fruits are plumper and rounder than Sugar Mountain fruits, but both are equally tasty and heavy-bearing when it comes to harvest time.
