An evergreen shrub that blooms in winter? That's Yuletide Camellia, which gifts gardeners in warmer regions (zones 7 through 10) with bright red blooms in winter. The compact size of this camellia means you can add it to nearly any spot in your landscape to enjoy its winter color. In fact, plant a group of them to form a hedge or short border wall to greet holiday visitors.
Growing Yuletide Camellia for its winter color is a top feature of this plant. But there is more: it can grow in wet regions but also handle some drought and heat. The red flowers are highlighted by a bright yellow center of stamens. Blooms appear above glossy, green leaves, beginning in September and continuing through the holidays and even into January. The shrub can grow in most native soils and part sun to shade, which makes it a perfect plant for woodland gardens as well as 4 to 5 foot hedges.
Yuletide Camellia Care
It's easy to care for this shrub. You don't have to prune Yuletide Camellia, but you can shape the shrub in late winter or early spring after it finishes flowering. Enjoy cutting flowers from your Yuletide Camellia to use in holiday décor and you might get even more blooms after trimming. In drier areas, add some mulch around the ground beneath the plant. Water your plant regularly for the first year or two and when you have less rain than typical for your area.
Yuletide Camellia Spacing
Otherwise, just sit back and enjoy your camellia as it grows through most any conditions. Yuletide Camellia grows to nearly 5 feet high and 8 feet wide. When creating a border or hedge, space the shrubs 6 to 8 feet apart.
