The leaves are a bold coppery-red in the spring before settling into a lustrous rich green. This plant is a natural climber, and the stems do not have thorns.
There isn’t much this shrub can’t do. Feature the Zephirine Drouhin Climbing Rose in a bed, create a flowering hedge, or mask a fence. Plant near a trellis or arbor, and this plant will climb and engulf the structure in beautiful blooms. Butterflies are attracted to the sweet-smelling flowers, and since this cultivar is thornless, you can confidently feature this plant in high-traffic areas. The Zephirine Drouhin Climbing Rose is a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8.
Zephirine Drouhin Climbing Rose Care
This plant needs full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. The soil should have high organic content, but this climbing rose is not fussy about the soil pH. Water new plants deeply to help establish the root system, but water weekly or when the top few inches of soil dry out once established. Apply mulch around the base of the shrub to retain moisture and feed the plant using a balanced fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks during the growing season.
Remove spent blooms to encourage the plant to rebloom during the growing season. Shape the shrub as needed during the late winter or early spring.
Zephirine Drouhin Climbing Rose Spacing
The Zephirine Drouhin Climbing Rose is a large perennial that will grow 8 to 12 feet tall and wide. Create a hedge or a mass planting by spacing plants 6 feet apart.
