Enchanting cherry blossoms signal spring, and Zuzu Ornamental Cherry (Zuzu Prunus incisa 'Rinpo') gives you the thrill of lush pink flowers in spring without having to care for a fruit tree. Zuzu is a compact shrub, only 5 feet high and wide. So, it needs less space in a yard than an actual fruit tree requires. The plant is cold hardy to zone 5 and heat tolerant to zone 9.

Zuzu Ornamental Cherry is related to fruit-bearing and ornamental cherry trees, but is bred to grow as an upright shrub, so it can fit in nearly any garden bed or corner of your landscape. Plant several along a sidewalk or garden bed for a luscious pink border in spring. Even before its abundant bloom, Zuzu's small leaves begin emerging as coppery orange, turning to deep green by summer. That means this shrub also makes a stunning statement as a stand-alone plant in the middle of a garden bed.

Zuzu Ornamental Cherry Care

Choose a sunny or mostly sunny spot for Zuzu Ornamental Cherry. Plant the shrub after the danger of frost has passed. The easy-care plant needs little maintenance, except average watering, especially in its first year or in dry heat. Because it grows in a columnar shape, Zuzu needs little pruning. The flowers form on the previous year's growth, so prune this cherry after it is done blooming in late spring or early summer.

Zuzu Ornamental Cherry Spacing

When planting Zuzu Ornamental Cherry as a border or hedge plant, space each shrub about 3 to 5 feet apart from one center to another. Then, just enjoy the pink spring show.
