The charming flowers of the Appalachian Blues Skullcap will ensure you won’t be singing the blues. This flowering plant is part of the mint family and features branched, upright stems. Dainty purplish-blue flowers with white accents bloom on tall flower spikes during the summer. The flowers hover over broad leaves with serrated edges that are a deep shade of green.

Appalachian Blues Skullcap is a clump-forming, mounded plant with an upright growth habit. Plant along borders or in beds or mass plantings. This adaptable plant can handle full sun or partial shade for flexible placement options. Scutellaria is native to North America and will thrive with minimal effort once acclimated.  Grow this stunner as a perennial in zones 4 through 8.

Appalachian Blues Skullcap Care

This plant requires moist to dry, well-drained soil. Plant in full sun to partial shade, but choose a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade in hot regions. Water this plant weekly or when the top few inches of soil dries out. Appalachian Blues Skullcap can handle dry periods but continue to water during a drought to ensure the plant continues to bloom. Fertilization is unnecessary, but apply a balanced fertilizer in the spring to get the plant off to a strong start.

Deadhead spent flowers to keep the blooms coming. Cut back growth in late fall or early spring. Appalachian Blues Skullcap is a clump-forming plant that can be divided every few years.

Appalachian Blues Skullcap Spacing

Appalachian Blues Skullcap is an upright perennial that will grow 20 to 24 inches tall and wide. Space plants 20 to 24 inches apart to create a stunning mass planting.
