Growing Zones
Appalachian Sedge Grass is a shade-loving plant grown for the texture it provides in a landscape. Tall, thin foliage has a wispy look that gently waves in a light breeze. The foliage is a consistent shade of medium green. Also known as Carex appalachica, this plant boasts rather inconspicuous springtime flowers, but the flowers make this plant a vibrant part of the local ecosystem.
Appalachian Sedge Grass is compact compared to other types of ornamental grass, and it grows about 10 to 12 inches tall. Use this grass as a groundcover, especially on sloped or uneven terrain. As a native plant, Appalachian Sedge Grass thrives with very little care, and it provides a welcoming habitat for small animals and insects. This grass is deer-resistant for added convenience. Grow this plant as a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 8.
Appalachian Sedge Grass Care
Appalachian Sedge Grass needs full to partial shade to thrive. Plant sedge in rich, moist, but well-drained soil. Water new plants weekly or when the top few inches of soil dry out. Established plants are more drought-tolerant.
Apply organic fertilizer annually in the spring. Trim back old growth in late winter before the flowers emerge.
Appalachian Sedge Grass Spacing
Appalachian Sedge Grass is an upright, ornamental sedge that will reach 10 to 12 inches tall and 8 to 10 inches wide.
