Arrowwood Viburnum adds depth and charm to any outdoor setting, thanks to its glossy green leaves and lace-like clusters of creamy white flowers appearing in late spring. By midsummer, these blooms mature into showy blue-black berries that welcome a variety of birds. Its foliage later shifts into brilliant shades of yellow, orange, or red in fall, adding a warm seasonal display. This multi-stemmed shrub grows between 6 and 10 feet tall and wide, making it an ideal choice for hedges, screens, or as a dramatic accent along a border.

In addition to its strong ornamental appeal, Arrowwood Viburnum is remarkably versatile. It adapts to different light conditions—thriving in full or partial sunlight—and accepts a range of soils, from well-drained to slightly moist. As a North American native, it blends seamlessly into naturalistic or wildlife-themed landscapes, providing nesting sites and nectar for pollinators. Plant it in small groups for a sweeping effect, as a specimen near a patio, or arrange several along a fence line for seasonal interest year-round.

Arrowwood Viburnum Care

Give this shrub moderately fertile, moist soil that drains well, although it tolerates some dryness after establishment. Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral pH and layer organic mulch around the base to retain moisture. Consistent watering in its first growing season encourages robust root development. An all-purpose slow-release fertilizer in early spring supports vibrant leaves and abundant flowers. Plant it in full sun to partial shade, adjusting moisture levels if your site receives intense afternoon heat.

Allow Arrowwood Viburnum to maintain its natural shape or trim lightly to preserve an upright, rounded form. Pruning is typically carried out after the flowers have faded, but dead or damaged stems can be removed at any time. If you prefer to shape it more heavily, avoid pruning in late summer to prevent removing new buds that lead to next season’s blooms. In cold regions, look for winter dieback and prune those stems in early spring.

Arrowwood Viburnum Spacing

Place each shrub about 5 to 8 feet apart if using them in a hedge, or allow up to 10 feet between plants when you want a more open landscape look. A container of at least 18 in diameter works if you decide to grow a younger shrub in a patio planter, though the plant will likely need transplanting as it matures.
