Growing Zones
The wispy foliage of the Bandwidth Maiden Grass (Miscanthus sinensis 'NCMS2B') creates a soft texture that provides a striking complement to a rock garden or anchors a garden bed. The green and yellow foliage is banded or has alternating rings of color, giving the leaves a colorful and unique look. Its medium-height plumes appear in late summer, adding subtle texture that contrasts nicely with perennials and shrubs. This hardy ornamental grass stays appealing well into fall, maintaining an attractive form even as temperatures drop.
This grass has an upright, clump-forming habit and can reach 25 to 30 inches tall, so plant it in an area that can support a tall plant or feature near the back of a bed. Include in borders or containers or use to control erosion. The foliage of this plant is deer- and rabbit-resistant, making this a wonderful option for areas with a lot of foraging animals. Bandwidth Maiden Grass is a sterile plant that grows as a perennial in USDA zones 5 through 10.
Bandwidth Maiden Grass Care
Plant Bandwidth in a well-draining soil with a moderately acidic to neutral pH. Place it in full sun for optimal leaf coloration and growth, though partial shade in hotter climates can help avoid stress. Water consistently during the first growing season, then cut back on irrigation once roots are established. A balanced fertilizer in spring supports healthy foliage and overall vigor.
Each spring, prune away old foliage near ground level to encourage new growth. Container-grown specimens do well in pots with adequate drainage, but avoid overwatering during rainy periods. In colder regions, leave the dried stalks in place through winter, then remove them before new growth emerges. Adding a light layer of mulch protects the roots from extreme temperature swings.
Bandwidth Maiden Grass Spacing
Allow about 30 inches of space on all sides if you’re creating a row or grouping, giving each clump room to develop its upright silhouette. For larger mass plantings, placing them around 25 inches apart creates a full, cohesive display. If growing in containers, choose a pot at least 12 to 16 inches wide to accommodate the root system and maintain proper moisture levels.
