The Bolivian Inch Plant (Callisia repens, also called Bolivian Jew, Turtle Vine, and Creeping Inch Plant) is a low-maintenance creeping plant. The leaves of this plant are small, almost olive green, tinged with raspberry, which continues onto the undersides. These leaves are gently wrapped around a dark vine, reaching up to two feet long. The Bolivian Inch Plant is easy to care for, needing little more than regular watering and bright indirect light.
Best Locations For Growing Bolivian Inch Plant
Great as a hanging plant, the Bolivian Inch Plant does well in a kitchen or bathroom window, with easier access to water and humidity. This plant works well as a tabletop plant as well, with its leaves clinging tightly and neatly to its vines, inching along decoratively. Because Callisia plants are non-toxic, the Bolivian Inch Plant is suitable for homes with children and pets.
Bolivian Inch Plant Sunlight Requirements
Place the Bolivian Inch Plant in a north- or east-facing window for all-day indirect bright light. South- and west-facing windows will work as well, though the plant should be protected from direct afternoon sunlight to avoid burning the leaves. In lower light, the Bolivian Inch Plant tends to become leggy, with the space between its leaves stretching and the plant losing its compact appearance.
Bolivian Inch Plant Care
The Bolivian Inch Plant will grow well in a standard houseplant potting mix that is peat based and well draining. Repot this plant every two years or so, choosing a pot an inch or two larger than the previous, with drainage holes. When watered incorrectly, the Bolivian Inch plant will develop soft stems (overwatering) or lose its lowest leaves (underwatering). This plant can be trimmed regularly to keep the plant compact and encourage branching, creating a fuller look.
Watering Bolivian Inch Plant
Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out in between waterings. Water deeply until water flows out the bottom of the pot about every 5-7 days, depending on lighting and temperature. These plants prefer consistently damp but not soggy soil and will wilt when underwatered. Consistent watering is key to keeping the plant healthy and full looking.
Feeding Bolivian Inch Plant
The Bolivian Inch Plant will benefit from regular watering during the growing season. In the spring and summer, use a liquid houseplant fertilizer. Water the fertilizer into the soil once or twice a month, taking care to follow dilution recommendations to avoid damaging the plant’s sensitive roots and leaves. You will not have to fertilize in the winter as plants slow their growth.
