Add some drama to a narrow garden bed with this compact clematis! Boulevard Alaina clematis is a “patio” clematis variety that stuns without overshadowing its neighbors in the garden. The spectacular pink flowers feature dark pink bars up the center of each petal, and those classic yellow clematis stamens at the center. Pollinators of all kinds love to visit these pretty pink flowers as they bloom from spring into early summer. This variety will also feature a re-bloom in fall after old flowers are snipped.
Boulevard clematis like Alaina feature a compact growth habit that makes it perfect for planting in large containers on patios and decks. It’s also well suited for small garden beds, or planting into landscapes that have existing mature plants that you don’t want to disturb with an overzealous vine. This is an adaptable variety that climbs best on thin wire, so consider adding wire to its trellis to support climbing.
Boulevard Alaina Clematis Care
Clematis like to have cool roots and sun-drenched leaves. Mulch the ground heavily to achieve this effect, or plant near perennials or groundcovers that will shade the ground. Pull the mulch layer away from the stem. Site the plant in well-drained soil, where the leaves and stems get 4 hours of sunlight per day. Root-stimulating fertilizer will encourage the plant to establish its root system quickly. Fertilize annually in spring.
This vine blooms on new and old wood, so it belongs in pruning group 2. Allow the plant to grow for a few years before pruning to encourage more blooms. Once the plant is mature, prune in early spring, cutting dead tops and leaving live stems. Snip spent blooms to encourage fall flowers on new growth. This compact clematis does best climbing up thin wire.
Boulevard Alaina Clematis Spacing
