One of our most dramatic compact clematis, Boulevard Paulie clematis is a showstopper in any garden! Boulevard Paulie has vibrant purple flowers that feature a burgundy bar in the center of each petal. Paulie has a white center with purple tips, which sets it apart from other yellow-centered clematis. Although Paulie has a dramatic look in gardens and containers alike, it’s well-behaved and easy-going.
Paulie clematis grows up to 4’ tall and 3’ wide in ideal conditions. This is a nice, compact growth habit for a clematis vine, which makes it perfect for city gardens, patios, decks, and small spaces. It's a cold-hardy, perennial vine that offers dependable spring blooms in Zones 4-9. Plant beside a trellis or wire to support its climbing growth, and you’ll be rewarded with showy early-season flowers.
Boulevard Paulie Clematis Care
Mulch your clematis heavily, but be sure to pull the mulch away from the stem. Site the plant in an area where the roots will remain cool, and the stems and leave get plenty of sunshine. Ideal soil conditions for Paulie are slightly alkaline to neutral, well-drained, and moderate moisture. Water the plant weekly, and fertilize annually in spring.
Boulevard Paulie clematis is in pruning group 3, which means it blooms on new growth in early summer. So this clematis can be cut back hard in late winter or early spring to prevent top heaviness. The first spring after planting, prune this clematis 12 inches from the ground. Deadhead in the summer to enjoy a rebloom in the fall.
Boulevard Paulie Clematis Spacing
This is a compact variety that still needs space to grow. Plant in a large container with a trellis, or in the ground with 2-3’ of space from other plants.
