Bouquet Perfect™ Primrose produces bunches of flowers on single stems throughout the early spring. Blue Ripples has semi-double, ruffled petals edged in a striking deep blue, making it a dramatic and colorful choice to grow in a container, hanging basket, or along a pathway in your garden. The long-lasting flowers are sterile, providing for a longer blooming period than other varieties of primrose. The mounded and naturally compact size of the flower stems gives this plant a well-tended look without extra work on your part.
Primroses thrive in seasonally wet or heavier soils and are great for adding color to a woodland garden, pond, or streamside garden. Blue Ripples grows well in containers and readily adds an early pop of color to window boxes and hanging baskets. The frilly flowers are a lovely contrast to early emerging shade plants such as ferns, bleeding hearts, and hostas, and are rarely damaged by browsing deer or rabbits.
Blue Ripples Primrose Care
Primroses are hardy spring bloomers and prefer fertile soil that stays consistently moist and has good drainage. They require full to partial shade. Dappled and brightly shaded locations will encourage good blooming while allowing the plants to remain colorful even as the heat of summer begins. Mulch Blue Ripples annually with shredded leaves, organic compost, or fine arborist chips to provide nutrients and shade the soil.
Deadheading Blue Ripples as the flowers fade not only keeps the plants tidy but encourages the production of more flowers throughout the growing season. Primroses die back naturally as the heat rises in early summer. Clean up the spent foliage only after it has completely died back around mid-summer.
Mulching the plant crowns with organic material in the winter provides added insulation, although this hardy perennial is tough enough to thrive in USDA growing zones 4-8 with little extra attention. Blue Ripples can be divided every few years, but it will not reproduce by seed, as it is sterile.
Blue Ripples Primrose Spacing
This perennial is perfectly at home in a container with at least an 8-inch diameter. You can also use it as a filler in a larger planter with early blooming bulbs and hardy annuals. Space plants 10 inches apart when planting in a garden bed.
