Feature
This gorgeous vining plant, native to Brazil, will bring a splash of the jungle right to your home! It’s low maintenance, requiring minimal watering, and is easy to grow indoors. This philodendron boasts beautiful green and yellow foliage. Also known as Cordatum Brasil, this variety features a segment on each leaf separating its yellow and green hues.
Best Locations For Growing Brasil Philodendron
Display this plant in your living room or bedroom, hanging from a ceiling or draping the vines across a wall. Just keep your plant away from your children and pets: philodendrons are toxic to both humans and animals.
Brasil Philodendron Sunlight Requirements
Your Brasil Philodendron will grow best in bright indirect light. Ideally, place it in an east-facing window or a few feet away from a south-facing window. Take care that your plant is not exposed to direct sunlight, which could cause sunburn. This variety does not do well in low-light conditions.
Brasil Philodendron Care
You’ll want to provide your Brasil Philodendron with loamy, moist, but well-drained soil that is acidic. This plant isn’t too picky when it comes to re-potting. Check the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot once a year. If roots are peaking out, it’s time to re-pot. Only increase the pot size by two inches at a time.
This philodendron sometimes suffers from curled leaves, and this is a sign you are not watering your plant enough. If you let your plant sit too long in dry soil, the roots may dry up and become unable to absorb water. If this is the case, you need to regrow the roots by doing a stem cutting propagation. Brown leaf tips are often a result of lack of humidity. Make sure you do not place your philodendron near an air vent, and take the proper steps to provide humidity for your plant. Browning leaves can also occur from a lack of water.
Watering Brasil Philodendron
Philodendrons like water. Make sure to water this plant thoroughly once a week or when the top couple inches of soil have dried out to achieve evenly moist soil from top to bottom. You can achieve this by letting the water run out of the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot. Try watering with distilled, rain or aquarium water to avoid mineral buildup in the soil.
This is a tropical plant, so you’ll want to provide it with high humidity. You can place it in a greenhouse or use a humidifier nearby, or even place the plant in the shower. A nearby tray full of wet pebbles and daily misting will also help.
Feeding Brasil Philodendron
Use a gentle fertilizer every two weeks. You can also use a regular liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Always fertilize after watering in order to avoid fertilizer burn. As the growing season comes to an end, you can spread feedings out to once a month.
