Growing Zones
A clumping grass native to the southeastern United States and the Great Lakes area prized for its upright form and versatility in the landscape. Growing to a height of 2 to 3 feet with a spread of 1 to 2 feet this ornamental grass is a haven for wildlife providing seed, protection and nesting materials.
Low maintenance and drought tolerant, this perennial grass requires no special attention. This grass turns reddish-brown in fall and may be cut back in the spring. A great companion planting for wildflowers, it would do well in a meadow or natural garden setting. May be planted in a pot or container but would need to be brought indoors in areas where the temperatures drop below freezing for any extended period of time. Winter hardy in zones 5 to 8 and unpalatable to deer.
Broomsedge Grass Care
Broomsedge does best in full sun and is not particular about soil type. This grass is tolerant of drought, salt, infertile soil and seasonal flooding. No need to fertilize the grass either, especially once established. Feel free to add compost when planting to help the plant get established. No need to water the grass once it's established. You may want to give it water once a week for the first growing season though, especially during periods of drought or extreme heat.
Cut to the ground in late winter in preparation for spring growth.
Broomsedge Grass Spacing
If planted in groups or en masse, Broomsedge should be spaced at a distance of 36 to 48 inches. May do well in a pot or container with protection against freezing temperatures.
