Earlier fruiting is what sets Bubble Up™ Beautyberry apart. While many beautyberries color too late in cooler climates, this selection fruits reliably and heavily along the entire stem. Pale pink summer flowers quietly pave the way for the real spectacle. Callicarpa x 'SMNCJLIEP' grows 4–6 feet tall and just 2–3 feet wide, forming an upright, space-efficient shrub that loads up with bright purple berries before frost can cut the show short.
Selected for strong landscape performance and consistent berry set, Bubble Up™ also carries excellent deer resistance and heat tolerance. It blooms and fruits on new wood, so even if winter knocks it back in colder zones, it rebounds and still produces berries that same season. The stems, lined in bright fruit, are striking in fresh fall arrangements. In autumn, foliage shifts toward warm orange tones, adding another layer of interest before leaf drop. One plant will set fruit on its own, though grouping increases impact.
Bubble Up™ Beautyberry Care
Plant Bubble Up™ in full sun for the heaviest flowering and fruit production. It tolerates average garden soil as long as drainage is adequate, with a preferred pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots, then provide supplemental irrigation during extended dry periods rather than frequent shallow watering. A modest application of a balanced granular fertilizer in spring is sufficient; excessive feeding can lead to overly soft growth.
Because it blooms on new wood, prune in early spring before growth begins. In colder climates, wait until you see where new shoots emerge, then remove any winter-damaged stems. It naturally leafs out late in spring, so patience is important before assuming dieback.
Bubble Up™ Beautyberry Spacing
Space plants 2–3 feet apart when creating a low screen or grouping in a sunny border. In landscape design, combine with Russian sage for a cool-toned late-season pairing, add black-eyed Susans for contrast at the front of the border, or place behind sedum to echo fall color as berries mature. We recommend this beautyberry for gardeners who want bold fall color without sacrificing valuable border space.
