Bunny Blue Sedge Grass (Carex laxiculmis) is a small but striking native grass to add to any rock garden, border, or other areas of the landscape. In addition to its wide, nearly metallic foliage, the grass provides great cover for wildlife and as a groundcover to help keep weeds down or reduce erosion. The grass boasts bluish-green foliage that reaches about 1 foot high and just over a foot around. Plant it as a border along walkways, or even between stepping stones.

You’ll enjoy that pretty foliage all year long, since Bunny Blue Sedge Grass also is evergreen. It grows best in full shade to partial sun, so it’s a versatile ornamental grass for rock gardens and other landscape uses. Tiny goldish brown flowers top the foliage in late spring or early summer. This little sedge is hardy to zones 5 through 9, so it can handle winter cold and summer heat. The grass grows to only about a foot high and 15 inches around and is a deer-resistant plant.

Bunny Blue Sedge Grass Care

Plant Bunny Blue in shade or part shade (no more than 4 to 6 hours of sun a day) for best performance. It can grow in average soil, but will benefit from adding organic matter to support growth and soil drainage. This sedge grass prefers moist soil that drains well so it does not get soggy. Water consistently and a little more during peak heat and afternoon sun.

This plant is low maintenance and requires little help to thrive. In late winter, cut the grass close to the ground to rejuvenate it before spring growth. It requires no fertilizer, but might benefit from the addition of organic plant food, a low-nitrogen fertilizer, or a top dressing of compost once each spring.

Bunny Blue Sedge Grass Spacing

Space your plants at least a foot apart to give the clumps room to grow and cascade a little. For a border effect, you can plant them a few inches closer to one another, but be sure to consider their mature spread.
