Chiffon® Rose of Sharon
Lacy Summer Flowers. Graceful Shrub Form.
Chiffon® Rose of Sharon features large, ruffled flowers on a naturally rounded form. Seven colors in the Plant Addicts collection range from crisp white and clear pink to blue-lavender, rich magenta, and deep lavender, bringing weeks of late-season color to sunny borders, screens, and specimen plantings.

Rose of Sharon With a Softer Flower Form
Chiffon® Rose of Sharon shrubs are distinguished by large flowers with ruffled inner petals that create a lacy, anemone-like center. The collection combines that distinctive bloom shape with an upright, rounded shrub habit and a long summer flowering season.
Lacy, Layered Flowers
The extra petals clustered through the center give Chiffon® blooms more depth than a typical single Rose of Sharon flower.
Color When Summer Is Mature
These large shrubs flower through summer and into the later part of the season, adding color after many spring shrubs have finished.
Large, Versatile Shrubs
Most mature between 8 and 12 feet tall and are excellent as flowering screens, back-of-border anchors, large specimens, and informal hedges.
Choose the Chiffon® Color That Fits Your Landscape
The seven selections carried by Plant Addicts share the characteristic ruffled center, but flower color ranges from pure white to blue-lavender and saturated magenta.

Use Chiffon® as the Tall Flowering Layer
Most Chiffon® shrubs eventually reach 8 to 12 feet tall. That size makes them better suited to the back or middle of a deep border than to the front edge of a foundation bed.
Plant lower flowering shrubs and perennials in front so the Rose of Sharon supplies height without leaving the lower planting bare. Hydrangeas make good partners because their rounded flower heads contrast with the open hibiscus blooms.
Leave enough width for the mature shrub so pruning needs will be minimal.
Chiffon® Rose of Sharon Quick Facts
Give It Sun, Drainage & Room to Grow
Chiffon® Rose of Sharon is relatively low maintenance once established. Full sun and proper spacing have the biggest impact on flowering and plant form.
Full Sun Produces the Best Flowering
Choose a site with at least six hours of direct sunlight. Rose of Sharon can tolerate partial shade, but flowering generally decreases as shade increases.
Soil Should Drain
Chiffon® shrubs adapt to ordinary garden soil, but avoid sites that remain saturated. Moist, well-drained soil provides the best condition for establishment and flowering.
Water Regularly During Establishment
Water newly planted shrubs consistently as roots establish. Mature plants tolerate dry periods better, although supplemental water during prolonged summer drought can help maintain flowers and foliage.
Prune in Late Winter or Early Spring
Chiffon® Rose of Sharon flowers on new wood, so shaping can be done before spring growth begins. Routine pruning is not required when the shrub has enough room to develop naturally.
Feed Lightly in Spring
An annual application of compost or a balanced slow-release fertilizer can support spring growth and summer flowering. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which promotes foliage at the expense of flowers.
Do Not Give Up on Bare Stems Too Early
Rose of Sharon is naturally late to leaf out. Established shrubs can remain bare even when many neighboring plants have started growing, then produce new foliage as temperatures warm.
Three Ways to Use Chiffon® Rose of Sharon
These are substantial shrubs. Put their height to good use instead of squeezing them into small foundation spaces.
Brighten a Deep Border
White Chiffon® stands out against dark foliage and works well as the taller background layer behind lower flowering shrubs and perennials.
Create a Summer Focal Point
Blue Chiffon® has an unusual cool flower color that becomes more noticeable beside warm pinks and deep purple-black foliage.
Extend Shrub-Border Color
Pair Rose of Sharon with shrubs that flower earlier or overlap part of its season so the border moves from early summer into late summer without depending on a single plant.
Yes—But Plan for a Large Shrub
Young Chiffon® Rose of Sharon plants can make impressive container specimens, serving as an upright thriller plant.
Use a large pot with drainage holes and remember that container soil dries faster than garden soil. Regular watering is important during hot weather.
Because these shrubs mature at 8 feet or taller, container culture is easiest when the plant can eventually be moved into the landscape or maintained in a very large permanent planter.
Chiffon® Is More Than a Close-Up Flower
Nursery-grown plants make the branching structure easier to see. The series develops an upright, rounded framework that becomes increasingly substantial as the shrubs mature.
Blue Chiffon®
Upright branching supports a relatively narrow 4- to 6-foot mature spread.
Pink Chiffon®
A tall, graceful shrub that can be shaped in early spring if a tighter form is preferred.
White Chiffon®
Dark green foliage creates a strong backdrop for the large white summer flowers.
Dark Lavender Chiffon®
A broader selection that can mature 6 to 10 feet wide when given room to grow.

About Plant Addicts
Chiffon® Rose of Sharon FAQs
What is Chiffon Rose of Sharon?
Chiffon® is a series of Hibiscus syriacus shrubs distinguished by large summer flowers with extra ruffled petals clustered through the center. Plant Addicts carries seven colors in the collection.
How big does Chiffon Rose of Sharon get?
Most Chiffon® varieties mature about 8 to 12 feet tall. Mature width varies more, from roughly 4 to 6 feet on narrower selections such as Blue, Pink, White, and Lavender Chiffon® to as much as 6 to 10 feet on Dark Lavender and Magenta Chiffon®.
How much sun does Chiffon Rose of Sharon need?
Full sun is best. Give the shrub at least six hours of direct sunlight for the strongest flower production. It can grow in partial shade, but fewer flowers should be expected.
When does Chiffon Rose of Sharon bloom?
Chiffon® Rose of Sharon flowers during summer, with many selections continuing into late summer or early fall. Starblast Chiffon™ is notable for beginning relatively early and maintaining a long bloom period.
Does Chiffon Rose of Sharon bloom on new or old wood?
Chiffon® Rose of Sharon blooms on new wood. Flower buds develop on the current season's growth, so any shaping is best completed in late winter or early spring before active growth begins.
Does Chiffon Rose of Sharon need pruning?
No regular pruning is required when the shrub has enough space. Prune in late winter or early spring if you need to remove damaged growth, improve shape, or control size.
Why has my Rose of Sharon not leafed out yet?
Rose of Sharon is naturally late to break dormancy. A healthy established shrub may remain bare after many surrounding plants have leafed out, so allow extra time in spring before assuming the plant has been lost.
Which Chiffon Rose of Sharon has blue flowers?
Blue Chiffon® produces blue-lavender flowers with the characteristic Chiffon® ruffled center. Its unusual cool flower color makes it especially useful with pink, red, white, and yellow-green companion plants.
What is the difference between Lavender Chiffon and Dark Lavender Chiffon?
Lavender Chiffon® has softer pink-lavender flowers and a mature spread around 4 to 6 feet. Dark Lavender Chiffon® produces a deeper, richer lavender-purple bloom and develops into a broader shrub that can reach 6 to 10 feet wide.
Which Chiffon Rose of Sharon has white flowers?
White Chiffon® has crisp white flowers with a fluffy white center. Starblast Chiffon™ also has white outer petals, but adds a strong magenta-red starburst through the center.
Which Chiffon Rose of Sharon has the deepest flower color?
Magenta Chiffon® offers the strongest saturated magenta-purple color, while Dark Lavender Chiffon® provides a deeper lavender-purple tone than the original Lavender Chiffon®.
Can Chiffon Rose of Sharon be used as a privacy screen?
Yes. The tall upright habit works well for flowering screens and informal hedges. Remember that Rose of Sharon is deciduous, so the plants lose their leaves in winter and do not provide year-round visual screening.
Can Chiffon Rose of Sharon grow in a container?
Young plants can grow well in large outdoor containers with good drainage. Because mature Chiffon® shrubs reach substantial sizes, they may eventually need a very large planter or a permanent place in the landscape.
Is Chiffon Rose of Sharon deer resistant?
Chiffon® Rose of Sharon is generally considered deer resistant. No plant is completely immune to browsing, but Rose of Sharon is typically less appealing to deer than many other flowering shrubs.
Does Chiffon Rose of Sharon attract pollinators?
Yes. The summer flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, making Chiffon® useful for adding nectar sources later in the growing season.
