Smooth hydrangeas are adaptable shrubs, and the Incrediball® series requires relatively little maintenance once established.
Planting Incrediball® Hydrangeas
Choose a location with part sun to full sun and moist, well-drained soil. More sun generally supports heavier flowering and stronger growth in cooler climates. Afternoon shade can help reduce moisture stress in hot regions.
Dig a planting hole about twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than the container. Set the shrub with the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil, backfill, and water thoroughly.
- Add 2–3 inches of mulch over the root zone.
- Keep mulch away from the stems.
- Water regularly during the first growing season.
- Avoid sites where water remains standing after rainfall.
When & How to Prune Incrediball® Hydrangeas
Prune Incrediball® hydrangeas in late winter or early spring before vigorous new growth begins. These smooth hydrangeas bloom on new wood, so spring pruning will not remove the coming summer's flower buds.
Cut branches back by about one-third of their total length. Leaving a permanent woody framework helps build a strong base capable of supporting the shrub's large flowers.
Remove dead, damaged, or weak stems at the same time. No routine summer pruning is necessary.
Spacing Incrediball® Hydrangeas
Give each shrub enough room to develop its naturally rounded shape. The original Incrediball® and Incrediball® Blush mature at about 4–5 feet wide, so allow about 5–6 feet between plants when you want clearly defined individual shrubs.
