If having a bright pink winter interest shrub sounds appealing, read on about the Candy Coralberry. While its foliage and unique arching limbs offer a pleasant texture during the spring and summer, winter is the time for this shrub to shine. After dropping its leaves, beautiful berries adorn the limbs until late winter.
Standing at only about 2’-2.5’ and 2.5’-3’ wide, this shrub is an excellent addition to border plantings that need that extra “pop” during the winter season. For even more decor ideas, clip off a stem or two and place them within floral arrangements. Use this darling shrub in mass planting, border planting or within hedges.
While its berries seem to be the main focal point, the Candy Coralberry is widely beneficial to pollinators by providing a late-season source of food from its bright pink flowers!
Both cold hardy and heat tolerant, this shrub is quite low maintenance.
Candy Coralberry Plant Care
The Candy Coralberry does best in full sun for flower and berry production, however it will tolerate partial shade. This shrub does not like wet roots consistently, so either plant where water can easily run off or use well-draining soil. Alternatively, you may plant it about 4”-6” above the surface of the ground and mound up with dirt. Choose its new home by determining where you’re wanting that extra “pop” of color and dig a hole at least two times the size of its root base.
As stated above, well-draining soil is a must. The specific soil pH requirements are minimal and are considered neutral. Avoid heavily acidic or heavily alkaline pH soil and your shrub will be thriving. Clay, loam and sand all provide the necessary base within the soil for the Candy Coralberry.
With consistent rainfall, your Candy Coralberry will thrive. Supplement watering when extremely hot temperatures have been around for 5-7 days with no rainfall. Water thoroughly without submerging the roots for an extended time.
Fertilizing is a breeze as the Candy Coralberry only needs one application per year and this can be done in late winter or early spring before the leaves bud out. Use a balanced fertilizer in either granular, spray, or stick form. 20-20-20, 20-30-20, and 18-24-16 fertilizers will provide the needed nutrients for the Candy Coralberry to prosper in its new season.
Each year in early spring, it is best to do a light pruning to both shape your Candy Coralberry to your liking and to allow new growth. The flowers and berries emerge from new growth, so pruning is essential for the best results. Only remove 1-5 branches per year to avoid over-pruning. Cut at the base of the plant about 1”-2” above the root base.
Candy Coralberry Plant Spacing
While it is compact, the Candy Coralberry is narrow at the bottom and has arching branches at the top. Plant at least 3.5 feet apart, center on center, and from surrounding shrubs. This spacing is the best practice for mass planting, border planting, and hedges.
