Chick Charms® Appletini™ Hens & Chicks packs apple-green rosettes with dark burgundy to near-black tips into a tiny, tough succulent. Sempervivum 'Reinhard' grows only about 2 to 3 inches tall, spreading 8 to 12 inches wide as new offsets form around the mother rosette. The pointed leaves keep their evergreen color through the seasons, with the strongest tones often showing in bright light and cool weather. Our landscape designer likes to use it in shallow planters and rock gardens where close-up foliage detail can be appreciated from a path, patio, or tabletop.
This Chick Charms® selection is a hardy hens and chicks type, prized for cold tolerance, drought tolerance, and easy offset production. Mature rosettes may send up pink star-shaped flowers in summer, then decline after blooming while the surrounding chicks continue the colony. Chick Charms® Appletini™ Hens & Chicks is deer resistant, rabbit resistant, low water, and well suited to gritty planting areas. Plant it in rock gardens, crevice gardens, low edging, green roofs, small containers, troughs, walls, and sunny groundcover-style groupings.
Chick Charms® Appletini™ Hens & Chicks Care
Plant Chick Charms® Appletini™ Hens & Chicks in full sun or morning sun with afternoon shade if summer temperatures stay high. It grows best in sandy, gritty, sharply drained soil with low to average fertility. Acidic to neutral soil is suitable, but drainage is far more important than rich soil.
Water once after planting to settle soil around the roots, and let the soil dry before watering again. Established plants need little water in the ground, though outdoor containers may need occasional soaking during hot, dry weather. Keep plants drier heading into winter, since wet soil during cold weather can cause rot.
Fertilizer is rarely needed, but a very light spring feeding with a low-nitrogen fertilizer can support fresh offsets in lean container mixes.
Remove dead lower leaves as they loosen from the rosette. After a mature hen flowers, cut out the spent flower stalk and fading rosette once the chicks around it have taken over the space. In rainy winter climates, grow Chick Charms® Appletini™ Hens & Chicks in raised beds, gravel mulch, or containers that can be moved under a roof edge.
Chick Charms® Appletini™ Hens & Chicks Spacing
Space Chick Charms® Appletini™ Hens & Chicks about 8 to 10 inches apart in rock gardens, edging, or low groundcover plantings. Use closer spacing in containers to fill a succulent bowl quickly. For pots, choose a shallow container at least 6 to 8 inches wide with drainage holes, and use a gritty cactus or succulent mix.
In sunny rock gardens, plant Chick Charms® Appletini™ Hens & Chicks with sedum and sea thrift, which share its need for lean soil and sharp drainage. Creeping thyme can cover nearby cracks or path edges while staying low enough to show off the rosettes. In containers, add dianthus for seasonal flowers above the succulent mound, keeping the whole planting in bright light with careful watering.
Be sure to buy several different Chick Charms to grow together and provide lots of different colors in your garden year round. The best thing is, once you plant these, no care or maintenance is necessary!
