Chick Charms® Bing Cherry™ Hens & Chicks form deep cherry-red rosettes that hold rich color for much of the year. Sempervivum 'Aglow' grows about 2 to 4 inches tall and 4 to 8 inches wide, with offsets spreading the planting outward over time. The foliage can show maroon, burgundy, green, orange, and copper tones as seasons change, often flushing greener in fall. We love growing these in garden planters, because the succulents are easy to care for and can survive if you forget to water regularly.

This Chick Charms® selection is a cold-hardy evergreen succulent with a fast offset habit and good drought tolerance once established. Pink summer flowers may rise above mature rosettes, and the flowering hen will decline afterward while the surrounding chicks remain. Chick Charms® Bing Cherry™ Hens & Chicks is pet safe, easy to propagate, and well suited to harsh sites with poor, gritty soil. Plant it in rock gardens, retaining walls, roof gardens, waterwise beds, dry edging, troughs, patio planters, and low groundcover clusters.

Chick Charms® Bing Cherry™ Hens & Chicks Care

Plant Chick Charms® Bing Cherry™ Hens & Chicks in full sun to filtered sun, with afternoon shade preferred in hot desert or southern climates. It grows best in gritty, rocky, sandy, or lean soil with excellent drainage and an acidic to neutral pH. Note heavy soil that stays wet can cause rot.

Let the soil dry before watering during the first year. Established plants need little water in the ground, though container-grown rosettes may need weekly soaking during hot, dry stretches. Fertilizer is rarely needed, and rich feeding can weaken color and loosen the rosette form. Use gravel top dressing so the leaves sit above damp soil.

Remove dried lower leaves as they loosen from the rosette. After a mature hen flowers, cut out the spent bloom stalk and fading rosette once nearby chicks have begun filling the space. In wet winter regions, grow Chick Charms® Bing Cherry™ Hens & Chicks in raised gravel beds, wall pockets, or containers that can be moved under cover during heavy rain.

Chick Charms® Bing Cherry™ Hens & Chicks Spacing

Space Chick Charms® Bing Cherry™ Hens & Chicks 8 to 10 inches apart in rock gardens, edging, and low succulent groups. Use 10 to 12 inches between plants when you want each cluster to develop with visible gravel around it. For containers, choose a shallow pot at least 6 to 8 inches wide with drainage holes, and use a gritty cactus or succulent mix.

In sunny dry borders, grow Chick Charms® Bing Cherry™ Hens & Chicks near sea thrift and red hot poker, which tolerate lean soil while adding flowers above the low rosettes. Russian sage can stand farther back in open, well-drained beds, giving height and airy summer bloom. In containers, use purslane along the rim and plant the hens and chicks higher for drainage.

We offer several different types of Chick Charms, each with their own unique color and patterns. Hens and chicks also spread once you plant them, filling in the planting area. Try buying a couple different types to create colorful carefree gardens!
