Chick Charms® Cinnamon Starburst Hens & Chicks develops cinnamon-red outer leaves around a bright apple-green center, giving each rosette a sharply defined two-tone pattern. Sempervivum ‘Jeanne d’Arc’ stays only about 2 to 4 inches tall while gradually forming a wider colony of offsets around the original plant. Narrow, pointed leaves carry small tufts of pale webbing at their tips, and mature rosettes may send up pink flowers in summer. We enjoy growing these in garden planters, because you do not need to remember to water these very often and they provide interest all year.

This evergreen succulent produces numerous chicks on stolons each spring, allowing a single rosette to develop into a broad patch over time. Individual hens are monocarpic, so a mature rosette dies after flowering while its surrounding offsets continue growing. These drought tolerant succulents are evergreen and can handle very poor soil conditions and cold temperatures. Plant them in rock gardens, gravel beds, retaining-wall pockets, roof gardens, and pathway edges that receive a lot of sunlight and little moisture.

Chick Charms® Cinnamon Starburst Hens & Chicks Care

Grow Chick Charms® Cinnamon Starburst Hens & Chicks in full sun for the strongest coloring and tightest rosette form. Filtered afternoon shade is helpful in hot summer climates. Plant in sandy, rocky, gritty, or other lean soil with excellent drainage. Soil pH is flexible, with mildly acidic through mildly alkaline conditions generally suitable.

Water newly planted rosettes about once a week during dry spring and summer weather, allowing the soil to dry between soakings. Established plants require little supplemental irrigation. Fertilizer is rarely needed because overly fertile soil can produce loose growth and weaker coloration. Winter conditions should remain comparatively dry to reduce the chance of crown rot.

Remove spent flower stalks after blooming and clear away a mother rosette once it has completely dried. Chicks can be separated after they begin forming roots and replanted during active spring or summer growth. Outdoor containers can remain cold through winter, but sheltering them from repeated heavy rain is useful in wet climates.

Chick Charms® Cinnamon Starburst Hens & Chicks Spacing

Space plants about 8 to 10 inches apart when you want individual rosettes to remain visible before the chicks fill the open ground. A shallow 10- to 12-inch container gives one plant room to form a small colony, while wider bowls work well for larger groupings. Keep drainage holes unobstructed.

Chick Charms® Cinnamon Starburst Hens & Chicks Companion Plants

Russian sage and potentilla make suitable landscape companions for sunny, fast-draining sites and will rise well above the low succulent mat. In containers, other hens & chicks can share the same coarse soil, strong light, and restrained watering while contributing different rosette shapes and seasonal foliage tones. Try collecting a few different Chick Charms® to create a unique water-wise garden that looks beautiful year round!
