Chick Charms® Cotton Candy Hens & Chicks forms compact green rosettes beneath wispy white centers that resemble freshly spun cobwebs. Sempervivum arachnoideum ‘Emily’ grows about 2 inches tall and spreads 4 to 6 inches, with burgundy edging becoming more noticeable as the seasons change. The silvery cobweb fibers are part of the plant itself and help limit moisture loss around the tightly packed leaves. We find the pale webbing most striking beside dark stone or deep red foliage for contrast.

This evergreen succulent produces chicks around each mature hen, gradually forming a low cluster across dry soil and narrow planting pockets. Pink, star-shaped flowers may rise on stems up to 12 inches tall during summer, after which the flowering rosette dies and its offsets continue the colony. Deer usually avoid the fleshy foliage, and established plants handle heat, frost, and drought. Use it along rock-garden ledges, in retaining-wall crevices, around gravel paths, or in shallow tabletop planters where the cottony centers can be viewed closely.

Water newly planted rosettes when the soil has dried through the upper inch and soak the root zone deeply. Once established, water during extended dry weather when leaves begin to lose firmness or appear slightly drawn inward. Little fertilizer is needed, and excess nitrogen can produce loose green leaves with reduced webbing and color. A thin gravel mulch keeps the crowns away from wet soil and helps prevent debris from collecting between the rosettes.

Cut away flower stalks after they fade and remove the spent hen once it becomes dry and hollow. Chicks with small roots can be separated in spring or early summer and pressed into gritty soil at the same depth. Keep winter containers beneath an overhang in rainy climates, since cold alone is less damaging than saturated potting mix.
