Giant Maroon Mountain Hens and Chicks is absolutely enormous for a sempervivum. This succulent reaches up to 10 inches across at maturity, giving it a dramatic look that is perfect in minimalist garden plans or as part of a specialty rock garden display. The deep maroon coloring of the petals gets more dramatic as the temperatures fall and remains vibrant in full sun or part shade.
Low-maintenance plants are perfect for gardeners short on time or experience. Chicks Charms® Maroon Mountain Hens and Chicks has virtually no upkeep required after the initial planting. This is the ultimate “plant and go” perennial. Use this Chicks Charms® to fill in around the edge of a dry garden border, create an intriguing rock garden display, or enliven a container to decorate a seating area with fabulous color and form.
Chick Charms® Giant Maroon Mountain Hen and Chicks Care
Hens and Chicks are tough and hardy, and tolerate a wide range of soil textures and fertility levels. The best planting locations have well-draining soil, full sun exposure, and sandy to loamy soil. Provide supplemental watering only during long periods of drought or heat, and mulch the soil with pea gravel or loose arborist chips. Container-grown Hens and Chicks will tolerate some shade as long as they receive at least 4 hours of direct sun each day.
Pruning and deadheading are not required to keep Hens and Chicks tidy and compact. Chicks (pups or plantlets) grow around the edges of the mother plant and can be removed and transplanted once they reach a couple of inches across. Alternatively, leave the chicks in place to root and fill in open spaces between plants.
Hens and Chicks do not require extra protection during the winter months. In fact, the cold weather helps to keep the deep maroon coloring vibrant. Container-grown plants may need to be moved if drainage becomes poor in the winter. Plants sitting in water for long periods become susceptible to root rot and should be moved to a dry location.
Chick Charms® Giant Maroon Mountain Hen and Chicks Spacing
Chick Charms® Hen and Chicks are perfect for growing in containers of all sorts. The mature size of the mother plant is about 10 inches across. Use pots or shallow dishes that have excellent drainage and a diameter of at least 8 inches for single plants. Space plants 10 inches apart when planting in a garden bed or in a large planter.
