Growing Zones
The Giants line of Chick Charms® Sempervivum may be the largest Hen and Chicks you’ve ever seen. The mature hen makes a dramatic statement when planted singly in a shallow bowl or pot. Copper Canyon is evergreen and sports deep jade green leaves that progress to a deep coppery red at the margins. Sempervivum is one of the easiest succulents to grow and is fully winter hardy in USDA zones 3-8. Flower stalks appear throughout the summer along with the offset plants, called chicks.
Chick Charms® Hen and Chicks are fully winter hardy, evergreen in all growing zones, and perfect for growing in a rock garden. They also work well at the edge of a sunny border or in a container that can be moved to decorate areas as needed. Deer and rabbits are rarely a problem for hens and chicks. Sempervivum is exceptionally drought tolerant and requires little supplemental watering when established in a garden bed.
Chick Charms® Giant Copper Canyon Hens and Chicks Care
Copper Canyon Hens and Chicks grow best with well-draining soil and full sun exposure. Shade during the early morning or late afternoon is acceptable, although shadier spots all day long may stunt growth and blooming. Hens and chicks grow well in shallow rocky spots or saucer-like containers.
No pruning is required for Copper Canyon Hens and Chicks. You can remove the spent flower spikes to tidy up the plant. As the chicks form, they can be left attached to the mother to expand the planting area. Alternatively, the chicks can be transplanted once they reach an easy-to-handle size.
Spring clean-up of any winter-damaged leaves helps to keep plants healthy and less likely to be attacked by pests or diseases. Use sharp pruning tools to make a clean cut that heals well. In dry climates, mist plants with water once a week to protect against spider mites and mealybugs.
Chick Charms® Giant Copper Canyon Hens and Chicks Spacing
Giant Copper Canyon Hens and Chicks reach 10 inches wide when fully mature. Space plants 10 inches apart to create a dense ground cover. Place plants farther apart to highlight the overall form and size. Choose a shallow bowl or pot that has at least an 8-inch opening when growing this succulent in a container.
