Glacier Blues Hens and Chicks is a dramatic addition to the Chick Charms® Giants collection. Giant may be an understatement, as these hardy succulents reach 10 inches across. They will form dense ground cover for tough spots in the garden or instantly spruce up a decorative planter on the patio or deck. Brilliant color is the number one reason to plant Glacier Blues. The glaucous modified leaves turn tones of rosy red as the weather cools in fall and continue to deepen through the winter.
Glacier Blues Hens and Chicks has few problems with pests or diseases and is exceptionally tolerant of deer and rabbit browsing. These succulents work well in rock gardens, moderate slopes, and hot, dry, difficult-to-plant locations. They form a dense mat of plants that are easy to divide as needed. Shallow tabletop planters or window boxes are ideal to display the geometric and intriguing colors of Hens and Chicks and and allow easy year-round care.
Chick Charms® Giants Glacier Blues Hen and Chicks Care
Unlike other succulent plants, Glacier Blues Hens and Chicks do not depend on sun exposure to maintain their brilliant foliage hues. The cold weather of late fall and winter increases the amount of red and pink tints in the foliage. Choose a location with excellent drainage and at least 6 hours of direct sun exposure for best growth. Glacier Blues will appreciate some protection from the hottest part of the day in zones 8-9, so placement in early morning or late afternoon sun is ideal. Water once a week until the plants are well established. Mulch the shallow root zone with pea gravel or partially decomposed arborist chips.
Hens and Chicks will periodically set offshoots, known as chicks. These small plants can be left attached to the mother plant to expand the planting or may be removed and planted in other areas. No seasonal pruning is required for Glacier Blues, making this plant an exceptionally low-maintenance choice for a first-time gardener. Flower stalks can be removed after blooming along with the hen once it dies back.
Hens and Chicks are some of the most cold hardy plants for the garden, needing only good drainage to survive winters in the coldest USDA growing zones.
Chick Charms® Giants Glacier Blues Hens and Chicks Spacing
The large size of Giants Glacier Blues makes it ideal to plant singly in a container with an 8-10 inch diameter or a 1-gallon capacity. Space garden-grown plants 12 inches apart to quickly form a dense ground cover.
