Chick Charms® Gold Crown Sempervivum is an eye-catching perennial succulent that will add year-round color to your garden! Its unique fleshy leaves are arranged in a rosette; each leaf is a striking red with golden-yellow tips. Chick Charms® Gold Crown Hens and Chicks multiplies abundantly, producing a mat of smaller rosettes around the main plant. It can grow interesting cymes of salmon-colored flowers held above the rosettes in summer.
Chick Charms® Gold Crown Hens and Chicks will form a low-growing, evergreen ground cover in conditions where most other plants fail to grow. It makes an excellent specimen plant for rock gardens, where it can grow in tight spaces between rocks. This low-maintenance perennial is perfect for growing in shallow containers on patios and decks. Its fiery red foliage is a nice contrast to the fleshy green leaves of other succulents in container arrangements.
Chick Charms® Gold Crown Hens and Chicks Care
Chick Charms® Gold Crown Sempervivum should be planted in full or partial sun. It needs well-drained soil and will flourish in sandy, gravelly, and nutrient-poor soils. Hens and chicks are drought tolerant and do not need much supplemental watering or fertilization. For container planting, a potting soil formulated for succulents works best.
Because they are monocarpic, Chick Charms® Gold Crown Sempervivum dies after flowering. This is normal, and removing flower stalks as they develop will not prevent the central ‘hen’ from dying. Deadhead once flowering is finished, and carefully remove the dead plant. The offsets will continue to live and propagate themselves after the main plant has flowered and died.
Since they are shallow rooted, hens and chicks are easy to divide and propagate. Simply pull off an offset by its stem and replant it in a suitable area with room to grow and spread.
Chick Charms® Gold Crown Hens and Chicks Spacing
Plant Chick Charms® Gold Crown Hens and Chicks 6-12 inches apart so each plant can fill in the space with its offshoots. When growing this succulent in containers, select a pot that is a few inches wider than the diameter of its cluster of rosettes.
