The bold colors of the Chick Charms® Gold Rush Hens and Chicks make this plant the focal point of a mixed container planting. Also known as Sempervivum 'Gold Rush' PPAF, this beauty features fleshy, pointed leaves that grow in a rosette formation. The outermost leaves are green, while the inner leaves are deep red with golden-yellow tips. The contrast of the red and the yellow makes this succulent stand out.
This plant is a mat-forming evergreen perennial. Feature this plant in a container or near the front of a mixed bed or rock garden. The spreading habit makes the plant an excellent ground cover. Hens are Chicks are very low maintenance and generally do best when left alone. Showy pink flowers bloom on thin stalks in the summer, and while the flowers are lovely, the foliage is the main attraction. Hens and Chicks are much more hardy than succulents are often thought to be, and Gold Rush Hens and Chicks grows readily in zones 3 through 8.
Chick Charms® Gold Rush Hens and Chicks Care
Care for the Chick Charms® Gold Rush Hens and Chicks is the same as many other succulents. This sun lover thrives in dry conditions. Full sunlight keeps the plant growing and supports the stunning foliage variegation. Dry, rocky soil is preferred. These plants are not picky about potting soil, but it must allow drainage. There is no need to fertilize because these plants are not heavy feeders.
The ‘hen’ dies after flowering and can gently be removed after it has withered. The hen will send out offshoots (‘chicks’) that are connected by a root network. The offshoots establish their own root system as the parent plant fades, so wait until the parent plant dies before removing it.
Chick Charms® Gold Rush Hens and Chicks Spacing
The Gold Rush Hens and Chicks reaches 2 to 3 inches tall and 8 to 12 inches across. New plants will fill in around the parent plants with time, so space plants 12 inches apart.
