Chick Charms® Mint Marvel Hens & Chicks develops crisp mint-green rosettes with burgundy-red tips that deepen during cooler weather. Sempervivum calcareum 'Mrs. Giuseppi' stays about 2 to 3 inches tall while spreading 5 to 12 inches through clusters of closely held offsets. The pointed leaves form clean, geometric rosettes that remain decorative through every season. We notice the red edging becomes most pronounced when the plant receives strong light and cool nights.
This hardy evergreen succulent grows actively in spring and summer, producing numerous chicks on short stolons that gradually create a broad, low colony. Mature hens may send up pink to purplish star-shaped flowers in summer, then die after blooming as the surrounding offsets continue the planting. Its cold tolerance, drought resistance, and compact habit suit rock walls, gravel beds, pathway borders, shallow troughs, and sunny roof gardens. Deer and rabbits generally pass it by, making it useful in exposed beds where browsing is common.
Chick Charms® Mint Marvel Hens & Chicks Care
Grow Chick Charms® Mint Marvel Hens & Chicks in full sun for tight rosettes and stronger tip color, with afternoon shade helpful during periods of extreme summer heat. Plant it in lean, sandy, gravelly, or rocky soil that drains immediately after watering. Soil pH can range from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline, provided the crown never remains wet.
Water newly planted rosettes every 5 to 7 days during dry weather for the first few weeks, allowing the soil to dry between applications. Once rooted, give the plant a deep drink during extended drought or when the leaves begin to look thinner and less firm. Fertilizer is rarely needed in garden soil, though a light spring application of a low-nitrogen organic feed may support plants growing in very poor potting media. Keep the crown dry through winter by using gravel mulch and avoiding sites where rain or melting snow collects.
Remove faded flower stalks after the blooming rosette has finished, then clear away the spent hen once it dries. Chicks with developing roots can be lifted and replanted in spring or early summer to extend the colony. Move potted plants beneath a roof overhang during wet winters, while leaving them exposed to cold so they maintain their natural dormancy cycle.
Chick Charms® Mint Marvel Hens & Chicks Spacing
Space plants 8 to 10 inches apart for a connected groundcover, or 5 to 6 inches apart when a faster mosaic effect is preferred. A shallow container at least 8 inches wide works for one plant, while a 12-inch bowl gives its offsets room to spread. Choose a frost-resistant pot with a generous drainage opening, and use a gritty succulent mix that does not hold moisture around the crown.
Chick Charms® Mint Marvel Hens & Chicks Companion Plants
For mixed containers, pair it with thyme and dianthus, which handle strong sun, lean soil, and restrained watering. Include lavender nearby in raised beds or gravel borders, as its upright form provides height above the low rosettes and shares the same need for sharp drainage. We strongly suggest ordering more than one type of hens and chicks to create color contrasts in the garden that last 12 months a year!
