Chick Charms® Plum Parfait™ Hens & Chicks layers plum, lavender, green, and red tones into a low rosette that changes with the weather. Sempervivum 'Prairie Sunset' forms loose medium-sized rosettes under 3 inches tall and 8 to 12 inches wide as offsets gather around the mother plant. Cold weather can deepen the foliage toward plum purple, while warm-season growth may show green leaves with red tips and natural waxy watermarks. They are best planted in clusters, and next to other colored hens and chicks to create a beautiful contrast in colors.
This Chick Charms® selection is a hardy evergreen succulent with drought tolerance once established and dependable offset production. Pink star-shaped flowers may rise above mature rosettes in summer, and each blooming hen will fade afterward while younger chicks continue the planting. Chick Charms® Plum Parfait™ Hens & Chicks is deer resistant, heat tolerant, pet safe, and suited to dry, lean planting sites. Plant it in rock gardens, living walls, retaining walls, roof gardens, dry borders, troughs, groundcover pockets, and low container arrangements.
Chick Charms® Plum Parfait™ Hens & Chicks Care
Plant Chick Charms® Plum Parfait™ Hens & Chicks in full sun to filtered sun; the more sunlight, the brighter the color. It grows best in average, gritty, sandy, or gravelly soil with excellent drainage and an acidic to neutral pH. Heavy wet soil should be avoided.
Water after planting to settle the roots, and allow the soil to dry before watering again. Established plants need occasional water in the ground, while container plantings may need weekly watering during hot, dry stretches. Fertilizer is rarely needed, and light spring feeding should be reserved for very lean container mixes. Gravel top dressing keeps the rosettes lifted above damp soil and helps reduce rot risk.
Remove dried lower leaves as they loosen from the rosette. After a mature hen blooms, cut away the spent flower stalk and fading rosette once the surrounding chicks have begun filling the space. In rainy winter climates, grow Chick Charms® Plum Parfait™ Hens & Chicks in raised beds, wall pockets, or containers that can be moved away from heavy rain.
Chick Charms® Plum Parfait™ Hens & Chicks Spacing
Space Chick Charms® Plum Parfait™ Hens & Chicks 8 to 10 inches apart in rock gardens, groundcover pockets, and edging plantings. Use 10 to 12 inches between plants when you want each rosette cluster to show individually. For containers, choose a shallow pot at least 6 to 8 inches wide with drainage holes, and fill it with a gritty cactus or succulent mix.
In sunny troughs, let Chick Charms® Plum Parfait™ Hens & Chicks grow with thyme and sedum, which share its need for lean soil and sharp drainage. Include dianthus in gravelly borders for low flowers above the plum-toned rosettes. In containers, plant African daisy near the edge, with the hens and chicks placed higher where drainage is quickest.
