Create bold color without much effort with the Chick Charms® Powdered Pastry Hens and Chicks. This Sempervivum cultivar has thick, fleshy leaves that grow in a rosette. Bicolor foliage is green near the base of the rosette and abruptly transitions to a bold burgundy. The cobweb-like hairs that grow on the foliage tips add depth and interest to the appearance.
Sempervivum is versatile and can be used as ground cover, featured in borders and rock gardens, or tucked into the gaps in a stone wall for a burst of color and greenery. Foragers often leave these plants alone so you can enjoy dependable color. This succulent is hardy and handles the heat of summer and the chill of winter like a champ. Grow the Chick Charms® Powdered Pastry Hens and Chicks as a perennial in zones 3 through 8.
Chick Charms® Powdered Pastry Hens and Chicks Care
Plant in full sun to part shade; expect larger plants in full sun. These succulents are drought tolerant, so they only need water when the soil dries out. Use a dry potting mix that is low or medium in quality with plenty of perlite for drainage. Sempervivum plants are not heavy feeders, so fertilizing isn’t mandatory.
The plants fade after blooming and send out stolons with new chicks. Remove the hens as they decline to make space for new chicks to grow and thrive.
Chick Charms® Powdered Pastry Hens and Chicks Spacing
Chick Charms® Powdered Pastry Hens and Chicks grows 2 to 3 inches tall but spreads up to 12 inches wide. Space plants 12 inches apart to create a mat-like appearance.
