This new plant will amaze you with its bright colors and beautiful shape in your garden this year. Just think if you massed this out in huge drifts of color!
Native as a wildflower in North American, Perennial Salvia, or sage as it is also known, is a hardy flower that grows in open meadows in tough, sometimes dry areas. Back to the Fuchsia has retained its parent plants hardiness, growing in Zones 3-8 with ease, and handling sub zero temperatures once fully established like a champ. Deep South gardeners will find that salvia likes to have a cold/cool season to reinvigorate it for the next year and will not grow in the hot humid months of summer for them. Besides being lovely in your full sun garden, you will enjoy the fragrant flowers and foliage on this member of the mint family.
Color Spires® Back to the Fuchsia Salvia Care
Plant in full sun for best performance. Salvia does not like wet soggy soils, so be sure to amend heavy soils to enhance their fast draining capability. Like most plants in the sage family, it can tolerate some drought, but will bloom best with consistent moisture. Preferring a pH range of 5.5 to 6.5, salvia is actually tolerant of a wide range of soil pH from acidic to alkaline, placing this lovely perennial in the easy to care for category. Water regularly when natural rainfall is lacking, or if you plant it in a container. Like most native wildflower descendants, Perennial Salvia does not require any fertilization unless planted in very poor soil. Applying a well composted organic material to the surface and lightly working it in the top layer of soil may be all that is needed on a yearly basis.
Removing the old flowers after they stop blooming will help new ones grow again. Pruning is typically not needed as this spring perennial will maintain its shape for many years. Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years for best performance. Deer and rabbits do not like the scent of salvia and will not browse on them and they are remarkably resistant to most insect infestations and plant diseases. Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds will be frequent visitors to your garden when you include perennial salvia in them.
Color Spires® Back to the Fuchsia Salvia Spacing
Space your plants 22 to 24 inches apart. Growing to 29 inches tall and spreading out about 24 inches, Back to the Fuchsia will spread out in your garden, filling in the space quickly. They make wonderful landscape borders, sidewalk or driveway edgings and function as upright thrillers in patio containers. Be sure to get started on your love affair with perennial Salvia Back to the Fuchsia today!
