Color Spires Crystal Blue Salvia gets its name from the unique light-blue flowers that resemble a mildly lavender sky. It's hard to find blue flowers, but this hybrid salvia (Salvia nemerosa) hits the mark. And that's not all—Salvia is the sage family. So the gray-green leaves of this pretty perennial have an earthy sage scent. That makes it perfect for containers placed near your entry or patio.
The fragrant leaves and stems of Color Spires Crystal Blue Salvia grow in a nice round clump nearly 20 inches high, and the flower stems rise from the center. The blue blooms should open in late spring or early summer. Like all salvias, its blossoms attract hummingbirds, bees and butterflies, but not deer or rabbits. This is a great plant to add to a natural landscape, maybe before a nice dark wall or rock to show off its flowers. But it also works well in containers or as a border plant in zones 3 through 8.
Color Spires Crystal Blue Salvia Care
Color Spires Crystal Blue Salvia can grow in nearly any soil that drains well. Plant your salvia in a spot that gets full sun and water it regularly until it is established. After that, you can cut back; the salvia is drought tolerant. But it will bloom and grow for you better with a little extra watering.
Your salvia shouldn't need fertilizing, but you can spread some organic compost around the plant each spring. You only need to trim off the flower stalks if you want to encourage it to bloom again.
Color Spires Crystal Blue Salvia Spacing
The stems and faded blooms are great for fresh or dried flower arrangements. When planting Color Spires Crystal Blue Salvia in a group or next to other plants, be sure to consider its mature size. Place your salvia at least 24 to 26 inches from the nearest plant.
