Dark Green Spreader Yew keeps a rich forest-green color through winter and in shade. Taxus × media ‘Dark Green Spreader’ develops a broad, dense habit about 4 to 5 feet tall and 6 to 7 feet wide, with soft needle-like foliage arranged along spreading branches. Fresh spring growth emerges lighter green before gradually matching the mature foliage. Since its height remains manageable while its width fills substantial space, this yew is highly useful beneath windows and along shaded foundations.

This slow-growing evergreen is remarkably flexible about light, performing well in full sun through substantial shade. Its foliage is noted for holding color well through winter, though protection from persistent cold winds is beneficial in exposed locations. Dark Green Spreader also accepts urban conditions and responds readily to clipping, making it useful for broad hedges and formal foundation plantings. Allow it to spread naturally along a shaded property edge, use several beneath a high tree canopy, or shape it into a low evergreen boundary.

Dark Green Spreader Yew Care

Grow Dark Green Spreader Yew in full sun, partial sun, or shade, with protection from harsh winter wind in colder or exposed sites. Average garden soil, sandy loam, and amended clay are suitable when drainage is excellent, since yews decline in saturated ground. Soil pH is flexible, ranging from mildly acidic through mildly alkaline conditions.

Keep the root ball consistently moist during establishment, checking the soil about 3 inches deep and watering thoroughly when it begins to dry. Established plants need supplemental irrigation mainly during extended rainless periods, with deep watering preferable to frequent shallow applications. Fertilizer needs are modest, though a slow-release evergreen or shrub fertilizer can be applied in early spring if growth appears weak. Maintain an organic mulch layer over the root zone for moisture retention and winter insulation, leaving the stems uncovered.

Dark Green Spreader Yew accepts pruning exceptionally well and can be lightly shaped in late spring after the fresh growth has begun to firm. For formal hedges, shear the outer growth as needed while periodically thinning selected branches to maintain foliage within the plant. Yew foliage, bark, and seeds are toxic if ingested, so consider placement carefully around pets, livestock, and young children.

Dark Green Spreader Yew Spacing

Space plants about 4 to 5 feet apart on center for a broad hedge or continuous foundation planting, and 6 to 7 feet apart when maintaining separate specimens. For container growing, choose a sturdy pot at least 22 to 24 inches wide with generous drainage holes, and monitor moisture closely because container roots dry more quickly during summer and experience colder temperatures in winter.

Dark Green Spreader Yew Companion Plants

Barrenwort and mountain laurel are suitable landscape companions for partially shaded sites, sharing an appreciation for well-drained soil while contributing different foliage forms and flowering seasons. Pansies can provide cool-season color around a container-grown yew in sun or bright partial shade.
