Dwarf Fountain Grass develops a soft fountain shape with buff-colored plumes that arch above narrow green foliage. Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hameln' stays compact at about 2 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide, so it fits borders, containers, and small garden spaces with ease. In late summer, the bottlebrush blooms emerge pinkish-white, then mature to tan and carry interest into fall and winter. We often use it near stone, gravel, or patio edges because the fine texture breaks up hard lines beautifully.
This warm-season ornamental grass grows as a clump and is valued for its smaller size, late-season flowers, and golden-russet fall color. The plumes work for fresh or dried arrangements, and birds may visit the seed heads later in the season. Dwarf Fountain Grass is deer and rabbit resistant, drought tolerant once established, and useful on slopes where a low, fibrous root system can help hold soil. Plant it in perennial borders, dry stream beds, rain gardens, courtyard plantings, mixed containers, or repeated along a walkway for a low, flowing edge.
Dwarf Fountain Grass Care
Plant Dwarf Fountain Grass in full sun for the strongest plumes and best clump shape. It grows in average, well-drained soil and tolerates acidic, neutral, and alkaline pH. Avoid heavy, wet clay unless it has been amended to improve drainage.
Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry during the first growing season. Established plants tolerate dry periods, though containers and hot reflected sites need closer moisture checks. Fertilize lightly in late winter to early spring with a general-purpose slow-release fertilizer or a thin layer of compost. Leave the tan foliage standing through winter for texture and extra crown protection.
Cut Dwarf Fountain Grass back to about 4 to 6 inches in late winter or early spring before new shoots appear. Divide mature clumps in spring if the center thins or the plant has outgrown its spot. Container plants should be kept on the drier side in winter, especially in cold climates where wet soil can be harder on the crown.
Dwarf Fountain Grass Spacing
Space Dwarf Fountain Grass 2 to 3 feet apart for a filled-in border, or 3 to 4 feet apart when each clump should stand separately. For containers, use a pot at least 16 inches wide with drainage holes and a well-drained potting mix. Potted plants need regular summer watering and should be cut back in spring before fresh growth begins.
Pair Dwarf Fountain Grass with blanket flowers, tickseed, sedum, or salvia in sunny beds with well-drained soil, as they share a tolerance for drought. Shasta daisies and coneflower add broad blooms that contrast nicely with the narrow foliage and soft plumes. In containers, use calibrachoa, verbena, or fan flower around the edge for seasonal color in full sun.
