Feature
There is a reason why Dracaenas are some of the most recognizable and widely used indoor plants. They are adaptable to a variety of indoor conditions and are easy to maintain. The Elegance Dracaena (Dracaena deremensis), like its relatives, is a tall yet narrow plant with wide, glossy green leaves and sturdy bamboo-like trunks that requires little more care than occasional watering and some light. This plant is a great option when looking to fill a small space with limited light.
Best Locations For Growing Elegance Dracaena
While the Elegance Dracaena thrives in bright to medium indirect light, it is still able to tolerate low light conditions. For this reason, this plant can often be found in room corners, hallways, and bedrooms without needing to be placed right in front of a window. Because it grows up rather than out, the Elegance Dracaena fits neatly into smaller spots without the worry that it will outgrow the space. Dracaenas are considered toxic, so care should be taken when placed in a home with pets and children.
Elegance Dracaena Sunlight Requirements
The Elegance Dracaena will grow best and last the longest in bright to medium indirect light, close to an east- or north-facing window. This plant is not tolerant of direct sunlight, so it should be placed away from a south- or west-facing window. Like other broad-leafed Dracaenas, the Elegance Dracaena can tolerate low light. This does not mean no light, however, and the plant should still have access to a light source, whether in a room with a bright window or supplied with artificial lighting.
Elegance Dracaena Care
One of the greatest benefits of a Dracaena is that there is little maintenance required to keep these plants happy and healthy. It is normal for the lowest leaves of the plant to dry up as the plant grows, and these leaves can be removed easily by plucking them off the trunk. Dracaenas seldom need repotting as they prefer to dry out in between waterings. Every two years or so, you can repot the Elegance Dracaena into a pot with drainage holes that is slightly larger than the previous. Be sure to always use a well-draining potting soil to ensure that the roots can dry out a bit in between waterings.
Watering Elegance Dracaena
One of the more common reasons Dracaenas develop issues is due to improper watering. These plants are prone to root rot if their roots do not dry out a bit in between waterings. Allow the top 75% or so of the soil to dry out before watering deeply, until water comes out the bottom of the pot. In bright light, the Elegance Dracaena may need water every 10-14 days. In lower light, Dracaenas will require water even less frequently. Dracaenas can be sensitive to tap water, so switch to distilled or rain water if the leaf tips begin to dry out and turn brown.
Feeding Elegance Dracaena
Because Dracaenas are slow growers, they are rather light feeders. In the growing season, from spring to the end of summer, water with diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer once a month. Always follow dilution recommendations to prevent damaging the plant with too much fertilizer. Fertilizing in the winter is not necessary as plants often go dormant and grow much slower.
